Open-cell foam is lower density, softer, and more flexible. It runs around R-3.6 per inch, which means you need more thickness to hit your target R-value. It's vapor-permeable - meaning moisture can pass through it - which is actually the right call in certain interior wall applications where you want the assembly to dry in both directions. It costs less per board foot than closed-cell, and for the right application, it performs well.

Closed-Cell Foam

Closed-cell foam is denser, rigid, and dramatically more efficient - roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch. It acts as a vapor barrier, which matters enormously in crawl spaces, exterior walls, roof decking, and metal building interiors where moisture infiltration causes real damage. It also adds structural rigidity to the assembly it's sprayed onto. For Nebraska's climate extremes, closed-cell is the right product in most exposed or below-grade applications. Foam also doesn't provide a food or moisture source for mold, so the biological degradation that affects organic insulation materials isn't a factor. The main exception is UV exposure on exterior or roof applications - foam used outdoors requires a protective coating, which is standard practice and part of how we install commercial roof foam systems.

Does spray foam work in pole barns and metal buildings?

Yes, and it's one of the best applications for it. Metal buildings conduct heat and cold directly, and they condense moisture on the interior skin when there's a temperature differential - which in Nebraska means most of the year.
